I know it deep in my soul

New fan art for Spirited Away:

This is not actually among my favorite Ghibli movies, although I find it to be beautiful and very fun to watch. I like the characters a lot and laugh at the jokes. The themes of self-discovery, cultural reconnection, and creating your own purpose in life are wonderful. I even cry at that part where Haku and Chihiro are falling! It’s just…you know when you can recognize that something is good without actually connecting to it that strongly? It’s that for me.
It’s probably because I like some of Studio Ghibli’s other movies VERY much and they set the bar ridiculously high for me.

Will you be proud of me?

New fan art for Arrietty! This movie is incredible, go watch it.

Let’s see how far you can get

New fan art for Suzuki Harunobu! I went to an exhibit on Japanese woodblock prints at the Portland Art Museum with Dylan Meconis, Erika Moen, and Bill Mudron last month and was really inspired by Harunobu’s prints.
This image was not in the exhibit; I found it later while searching for his work online. It is probably a sophisticated literary reference, but to me it is a really amusing image of a courtesan so engrossed in her book that she doesn’t realize she’s being kidnapped by a fish.

You are so precious to me cute as can be

New fan art for Dumbo. I was in a mood and watched the movie for the first time since childhood. I did NOT remember it being so sad….! Also, it was very strange how much this clip made me want babies.

He rights the outlaw wrongs on Mars

My studiomate Dustin Weaver introduced me to The Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast last week. It is “a staged production in the style of old-time radio” and it is absolutely hilarious. There are a lot of great segments on the show, but Sparks Nevada, Marshal on Mars is by far my favorite. I overcame my podcast ineptitude to download and listen to everything currently available. Naturally, here is some fan art:

There are several hours’ worth of material available on iTunes. Go! Listen! And people have made some pretty awesome art for the show that you should check out.

Baby you could sit and hope that providence will fray the rope

You oughta see you

Here’s the first of my 2 contributions to Women of Wonder Day: Buffy!

Love love love Buffy. Talk about an empowering character. I’m kind of glad I saw the show for the first time at 22. Adults need strong characters to emulate, too!
